The Faculty of Humanities, Department of Russian and Slavic Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Centre d'études Viacheslav Ivanov (Rome), The Library of Russian Philosophy and Culture "The Losev House" (Moscow) and the Russian House in Tel Aviv invite you to attend the presentation of the book Viacheslav Ivanov: the Enigma of Modernism (Moscow: Vodoley, 2021).
The book examines the cultural legacy of Viacheslav Ivanov (1866 – 1949), one of the outstanding figures of European Modernism. It contains the proceedings of the XI International Ivanov conference, Viacheslav Ivanov: the Enigma of Modernism, held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, May 5-7, 2019 (Israel). The authors consider Ivanov's role as a leading Symbolist poet, philosopher and historian of ideas as well as his influence on the development of literature, art, music and theatre in Russia, Europe and Eretz Israel.
One of the important subjects of study is Ivanov's interaction with the contemporary Jewish and Modern Hebrew renaissance. The book features essays by Russian, European, American and Israeli scholars, based on rich archival and visual sources, many of which are published here for the first time. These include valuable illustrations by Konstantin Somov and Nathan Altman as well as expressionist photographs by the famous Hess sisters, Nini and Carry. The volume will be of interest to philologists and philosophers, specialists in theatre and music as well as readers curious about Russian poetry and culture in an international context.
